IBM Makes Takes Another Big Step To Hybrid Computing
While we (the tech industry) tend to talk about devices, on-premises servers, and cloud computing as if they are individual platforms, in reality, they are a single hybrid platform that works together over vast public and private networks. Every platform from the smartphone to the largest data centers are part of a hybrid computing environment. Now, companies are rushing to take advantage of the flexibility and cost advantages by leveraging a combination of on-premises, private cloud, and public cloud resources in a hybrid fashion. At the same time, major technology and systems vendors are rushing to enable hybrid cloud environments. IBM, long a proponent of hybrid cloud solutions, just took another step by enabling some of the last of its platforms, IBM i and AIX, to leverage cloud services on IBM Cloud.
IBM has been aggressively working to enable a true hybrid environment where applications are portable across platforms. Earlier this year, IBM announced the ability to leverage its industry-leading Watson artificial intelligence (AI) platform on any cloud or on-premises system. IBM is acquiring Red Hat to enhance its hybrid cloud platform. And, the company expanded the capability and portability of its DB2 data management platform.
Today, IBM announced the ability to leverage its unique turnkey operating environment, IBM i, and its AIX UNIX operating systems on IBM Cloud. Both OSs debuted in the 1980s and have a long history with many IBM customers. In addition, IBM i remains one of the most automated, fully integrated, and low-maintenance operating environments. Extending both OSs to IBM Cloud will allow customers to expand their resources on-demand, to migrate to the cloud, to leverage the latest Power9 servers, and to leverage IBM’s extensive resources. IBM is rolling out the service first in North America for customers using IBM i or AIX on Power servers. In conjunction with the extension of the hybrid cloud platform, IBM also announced a program to validate business partners with Power Systems expertise.
